  • History: Arthur Miller's famous work The Crucible provides an insight into the mass hysteria that swept across the devout founders of the US in the late 1600s. The Salem Witch Trials occurred when a bizarre mis-application of faith was coupled with local feuds and led to a horrible series of tragic deaths by hanging and burning at the stake.

  • Era: First
  • History: Early in the French Revolutionary Wars, Spain was defeated by France and later became France's ally in return for support in Italy. This support led in turn to the British blockading the Spanish in the Americas, which was the start of the Anglo Spanish War. One of the great battles of this war is the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, where 15 British Ships of the Line bested 27 Spanish Ships and resulted in a memorable exchange to Admiral Jervis: "There are eight sail of the line,...
